From the author of the #1 bestselling The Atlantis Gene comes a new novel in which the world's past and future rests in the hands of five unwitting strangers in this definitive edition of A. G. Riddle's time-traveling, mind-bending speculative thriller.

En route to London from New York, Flight 305 suddenly loses power and crash-lands in the English countryside, plunging a group of strangers into a mysterious adventure that will have repercussions for all of humankind.

Struggling to stay alive, the survivors soon realize that the world they've crashed in is very different from the one they left. But where are they? Why are they here? And how will they get back home?

Five passengers seem to hold clues about what's really going on: writer Harper Lane, venture capitalist Nick Stone, German genetic researcher Sabrina Schröder, computer scientist Yul Tan, and Grayson Shaw, the son of a billionaire philanthropist.

As more facts about the crash emerge, it becomes clear that some in this group know more than they're letting on—answers that will lead Harper and Nick to uncover a far-reaching conspiracy involving their own lives. As they begin to piece together the truth, they discover they have the power to change the future and the past—to save our world . . . or end it.

A wildly inventive and propulsive adventure full of hairpin twists, Departure is a thrilling tale that weaves together power, ambition, fate, memory, and love, from a bold and visionary talent.

Mysterious plane crashes in deserted countrysides are likely to bring up memories of a certain TV show, but this light revision of a self-published bestseller dwells more on the decisions people have to make in stressful and unexplained circumstances. Unhappy venture capitalist Nick Stone and conflicted writer Harper Lane are on the doomed flight, and they have surprising responses to finding that the crash has deposited them in 2147 England, which has been shaped by their decisions in their native time of the 21st century. The crash itself turns out to be no accident but an attempt to redeem previous mistakes that come close to dooming humanity. Riddle (the Origin Mystery trilogy) makes an effort to keep the focus on how his characters react to each other (including to their future selves) rather than to the technological marvels that reshaped their world. But the scale of those marvels—thousand-foot dams across Gibraltar, orbital habitats, immortality, Stonehenge under glass—is what will draw the reader’s attention most strongly, particularly when the character interaction falls into well-worn paths. Agent: Danny Baror, Scovil Galen Ghosh Literary Agency.

A plane on its way from New York to Heathrow crashes in the English countryside. Among the survivors are Harper Lane, a London ghostwriter facing a big decision about her next project, and venture capitalist Nick Stone. The two work together to save those they can, while wondering why no rescuers have appeared on the scene. They soon realize that the crash was no accident and that their fellow passengers know more than they are telling about what happened to the plane, and where--and when--they all are now. VERDICT An exciting action-packed suspenseful opening (and one that will inevitably remind readers of the TV show Lost) takes a sf turn that unfortunately squanders its promise on a implausible futuristic plotline. Riddle's ("The Origin Mystery" trilogy) novel, which was wildly successful when self-published in 2014, has already been optioned for a film, proving that for some readers the propulsive action is enough to carry the day. Those seeking deeper characterizations will probably want to look elsewhere.--MM

Survivors of an unusual plane crash race to understand a strange new world. Harper Lane has a big decision to make when her flight from New York lands in London. Except it doesn't. It crashes-and that's just the beginning of the surviving passengers' troubles. Even though Nick Stone, another passenger, immediately takes charge of the situation and organizes a rescue operation to get people out of the tail section of the plane, plenty of troubling unanswered questions remain. Such as, why is it that no rescue personnel have showed up, nobody's cellphone works, and most importantly, where exactly are they? Propelled by these mysteries, and plenty of action, the opening chapters of this novel gallop along. Unfortunately, the answers to all these questions don't quite fulfill the promise of the strong opening. Once Harper and Nick start to figure out where they've landed, with help from the no-nonsense doctor Sabrina Schroder and Yul Tan, who won't stop working on his laptop even in a broken-apart plane, the narrative starts to get bogged down in lengthy explanations, and the characters stop feeling like living, breathing people and start feeling like devices for advancing the plot. The novel wants to raise good questions about how our decisions shape our futures, but the conspiracies and counterconspiracies our heroes find themselves embroiled in simply don't ring true. This sci-fi mystery starts strong, but the tangled plot that follows ultimately fails to satisfy.
