Steve wishes he had as much drive to win at tennis as his older sister, Ginny. He knows nothing would please his father more. But the truth is, Ginny is the real tennis ace in the family. Gr 3-6-Steve Greeley, 12, and his sister Ginny, 14, are excellent tennis players. Their father coaches them and has high hopes that his son will someday play on the pro tour, something he could not do because of a knee injury. Steve, however, has other interests and isn't ready to commit himself to full-time tennis. Meanwhile, their father doesn't take Ginny's game seriously, and she would love to go pro. The plot is transparent but the lively action throughout will keep young players intrigued. However, readers will have to know quite a bit about the game. Some terms are defined within the text, but many are not. Christopher serves another winner for fans of the sport.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI

In "Soccer Duel", center striker Renny finds he has a lot in common with a boy on the rival team--including similar family problems. "Tennis Ace" depicts a state champion who lacks the driving ambition of his overbearing father. Both boys deal with a more inner conflict than is usual for Christopher protagonists, and while the prose is generally pedestrian, the books feature plenty of sports action.
