Every legend must start somewhere...
No prisoner who enters the gates of HopeWell ever leaves. But from the moment Oriel sets foot inside Anatroshka's most formidable prison camp, she unsettles both commandant and prisoner alike with eyes that see beyond the surface and music that trails her everywhere.
Petite and delicate though she appears, Oriel bows before neither threat nor punishment. Moreover, she makes no attempt to hide her intention: Oriel plans to escape the inescapable HopeWell.
But when facades are stripped away and myth becomes clothed in flesh, what begins as a prison break becomes a mission to stop the invasion of evil itself.

Gr 9 Up-After the Fall, Terrestrial (the physical world) and Echoing (the celestial world) are separated by the Wall. Oriel, the Key of Everything, finds herself in a predicament when she abandons her position at the Vault to prove to Creator that she is powerful and able to defend herself. Creator has His own purpose for allowing her this escapade. It is because of Oriel that Gareth, Prince of Guardians, is reluctantly but gradually moved to restore his relationship with Creator. (For years, Gareth struggled with guilt because he killed a man who found the gateway to Echoing and was going to tell evil Levioth.) Oriel places everyone in jeopardy when she is captured by Levioth and a plan is put into motion to breach the Wall and unlock the Bottomless Regions. Occurring around HopeWell Prison in Anatroshka, where the Keyhole to the Bottomless Regions is revealed, the battle between good and evil comes to a head, which will determine the future of all. Although the characters are fully developed, the slow pacing of this Christian fantasy novel could squelch interest. VERDICT Schroeder's evil characters will draw readers into their darkness, while the "good" characters offer readers a sense of redeeming hope. Readers with a biblical background will have a better understanding of the story and its purpose.-Susan Harris, Ridgeway High School, TN
