      Mandie's life unravels when her father dies. She lives in the early 1900s in North Carolina, and her only friend is a Cherokee Indian, Uncle Ned. Forbes admirably recreates the language of the Cherokees, black servants, and the other people Mandie encounters as she searches for her kin. This fascinating history lesson is replete with details about a tunnel used by the Cherokee, Bible quotes, and racial issues. The story twists and turns until Mandie finds her birth mother.
